The Metro Denver Realtor Foundation’s Ninth Annual Golf Classic, held recently at the Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora, raised over $14,000 on behalf of Back Packs for Kids and the Colorado Center for the Blind. The event included breakfast, an awards luncheon, silent auction and special door prizes. The Golf Classic was co-chaired by Mary Ann Hinrichsen, a leading broker associate with Re/Max Masters Inc., and Peggy Talbot, the real estate company’s ambassador.
The foundation’s mission is to improve the communities it serves through housing, education and neighborhood improvements. For the second year, it has supported the Colorado Center for the Blind to empower blind persons to lead independent lives as fully integrated, productive and contributing members of society by providing them with comprehensive training, support and opportunities that help develop positive attitudes.
There are more than 57,000 legally blind children in the United States. Of this population, 55 percent will not graduate from high school and more than 75 percent will not become employed as adults. These statistics are preventable. Blind children and their families need support, training, advocacy and the knowledge that resources are available. The Backpacks for Kids program is endeavoring to raise enough to purchase 2,000 backpacks in 2009 and fill them with essential school supplies for the fall and spring semesters.
